Framing Life

Abstract:

Framing is an important part of taking photos or making movies. It involves choosing what to register, and the appropriate lighting, filter and lenses, among other things. The artist tries to "capture" subtle things that are happening, like emotions and intensions, by means of images. In science, we also need to "frame" a phenomenon and "capture" subtle things occurring in Nature. Framing, in science, is called modelling. The "images" in this case are of mathematical, computational or other abstract nature. This framing has been widely achieved with respect to physical and chemical phenomena, while only locally, partially and in a 'ad hoc' manner, with respect to life phenomena.

The present talk shall address the problem of finding the right perspective to model life phenomena in a more encompassing manner; to model them in a way that enable the control of their high complexity, the finding of more perennial biological aspects, and the establishment of universals and laws. It will focus on biological organisation, under the supposition that the prevalent presence and active role of organisation in live phenomena is exactly what distinguishes it from physical phenomena. After reviewing some historical developments, concerning a variety of biological aspects, we shall see some solutions for treating organization formally that have been proposed and discuss the reasoning possibilities that they add to our intellectual toolbox.
