The first-level of master degree in mathematics was approved in March, 2018. Since the establishment of the second-level master degree in applied mathematics in 2006, the main evaluation indexes are higher than national average level, which is assigned in evaluation of national disciplines in 2012. The undergraduate supporting subject is informatics and computational science, aiming at developing applied mathematics theory and cultivating applied mathematics talents. The specialty of this subject orientation is the research of differential equation theory and its applications. Meanwhile, the discipline pays attention to interdisciplinary integration to form the interdisciplinary direction of computational biology, which integrates mathematics and informatics, light industry, and life sciences. Now, we have Jiangsu Provincial Research Center of Light Industrial Opto-Electronic Engineering and Technology and Intersection Research Center of Mathematics and Informatics. The discipline has already cultivated 111 excellent talents for the Yangtze River Delta Economic Zone. All of graduates are employed or studying for Ph.D. degree, which are highly praised by employers.
The discipline relies on the development of the dominant disciplines of Jiangnan University. Currently, the discipline has a strong academic faculty of 33 members, including 6 full professors, 20 associate professors and 7 lectures, 1 Ph.D. supervisor, 20 Master supervisors. All of members have Ph.D. degrees and 60.61% of members have gained international experience through further studies, co-research or academic visits in different countries. A well-structured teacher team is formed, that 81.82% of teachers are under 45 years old and 33.33% of teachers are under 35 years old.
In recent 5 years, it has undertaken a large quantity of projects including 25 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 14 provincial or ministerial projects, 14 other government sponsored research projects and 24 enterprise projects. The topics of projects are related to logical reasoning and control, theory and method of neural network model, molecular regulation mechanisms of tumor suppressor genes, biological network structure modeling and other fields. Up to now, 298 academic papers has been published in Applied Mathematical Modelling, IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems, Fuzzy Sets and Systems, Applied Mathematics Letters, Information Sciences, Journal of Computational and Applied Mathematics, Nonlinear Dynamics, BMC Systems Biology, International Journal of Appropriate Reasoning and so on. Among them, 142 papers are indexed in SCI(E), one paper are indexed in ESI high level. Meanwhile, 3 monographs have been published. 10 provincial and ministerial level scientific research awards have been received.
The discipline has a good education environment. There are two teaching computer (network) rooms, three mathematics laboratories for Master-program students, two provincial postgraduate workstations, one research and innovation mathematics laboratory. In 2015, the Interdisciplinary Research Center for Information and Mathematics was established, which is equipped with the American Mathematical Society electronic journal, MathSciNet database, the American Institute of Industrial and Applied Mathematics periodicals, Project-Euclide, IG-Publishing and other mathematical resources database. At the same time, laboratory is around 1200m2 with nearly 20 million Yuan worth of equipment including 320 sets of computer equipment. There are various scholarship programs covering all students in this discipline. In the past five years, graduate students have published more than 80 papers as the first author, 24 of which are SCI(E) index. Second prize for 9 times and third prize for 15 times are awarded in the National Graduate Mathematics Modeling Competition.
The first-level Mathematical discipline (0701) authorized to offer master degree includes four research directions:
01 Logic and Algebra
Based on group theory, Logic and algebra has been used to describe the structure of system and do the research in applied mathematics, which covers two major fields, logical reasoning and algebra. Its characteristic is the combination of logical reasoning and algebra, aiming at studying the relationship between systematic logical operations and algebraic operations. The research has been focusing on several topics, including the description of the structure of the group based on a given subgroup, the description and application of various algebraic structures related to semi-groups, rings, and domains, the relationship between logical reasoning and algebraic structures, fuzzy algebra and soft computing, the theory of combinatorial design and its applications and so on.
02 Scientific Engineering Computation
Scientific computation has always been one of the core issues in the study of complex problems, which has become the third most important method besides of theoretical methods and experimental methods. It plays a crucial role in the use of mathematics to solve various scientific and engineering problems. As an important tool of complex phenomenon interpretation and engineering system modeling, the specialty of this subject is carrying on the simulation with computer beyond the current experimental ability or experimental phenomena that cannot be repeated. The research has been focusing on several topics, including the theory and method of description and analysis structural information on complex system, pattern recognition and intelligent calculation, analysis of key nodes and calculation of communication on networks.
03 Differential Equation Theory and its Applications
Differential equation model and theory have wide applications in various fields, which is one of the most active research areas in applied mathematics. The specialty of this subject is to focus on the modeling of differential equations combined with the other dominant disciplines of Jiangnan University, such as positive problems and inverse problems. The researches include the stability of the neural network model and the existence of solutions, the synchronization of complex networks and multi-agent consistency problems, the long-time behavior of the development equations, the theory and methods of numerical solutions of differential equations and so on.
04 Computational Biology
Computational biology is an interdisciplinary discipline of mathematics, informatics and life science. It studies mathematical theories and methods related to the computation of biological molecules, simulation of structure and function, and information processing, which clarifies the biological significance of biological data. The research has been focusing on the areas including theories and methods of system modeling and analysis of biological networks, dynamic regulation mechanisms of complex biological networks, construction of biological database systems and so on. This discipline relies on the Wuxi Biocomputing Engineering Technology Research Center and the other dominant disciplines of Jiangnan University, which promotes the penetration and application of mathematics in biology and provides a platform for the cultivation of computational biology talents.
